Mayor Donates Sanitary Pads to Hundreds

By Sharine Mukazi

TWO HUNDRED young people from selected institutions in Chitungwiza today received sanitary ware from Mayor Rosaria Mangoma, in a donation drive facilitated through Chitungwiza Gender Desk in partnership with Chad’s Corner of Compassion.

The beneficiaries included 36 teen mothers from Imba Yamai Association, 48 pupils from Dungwiza Primary School, 48 from Tasimukira, 36 from Farai Primary School, and 32 learners from Sharon Cohen Special Education School.

Chitungwiza Social Welfare Officer, Mr Aaron Mhonyera, who is part of the Gender Desk, assisted in identifying the beneficiaries.

Speaking during handover ceremonies at the institutions, Mayor Mangoma urged the youths to adopt good hygiene practices and remain focused on their education.

“Cleanliness is next to godliness. When we use sanitary pads, there is a need to dispose of them properly. Flushing them into the sewer system causes bursts and blockages,” she said at Farai Primary School.

“I call upon you to obey your teachers and value your education. Some of you dream of becoming doctors or pilots—stay focused. Do not be distracted by drugs, substance abuse or early relationships. Above all, let us pray for our dreams to come true.”

District Schools Inspector Dr Elisha Kujeke commended the initiative, stressing that menstrual health should never hinder education.

“Wearing pads is being smart. No one should miss lessons because of menstruation. If you face challenges in accessing pads, feel free to approach school authorities. A school must be a home and a healthy place,” he said.

“Last year, during the feeding programme, we had no dropouts. Menstrual challenges should not lead to absenteeism or dropouts. As examinations approach, I urge you to remain prayerful.”

Farai Primary School head, Mr Sunset Mhindiko, expressed gratitude, saying the donation would ease the burden on both pupils and parents.

“Mayor, thank you for remembering your Farai Primary family. This gesture will go a long way in assisting our children. Learners, this is an expression of love. Do not let us down—your first marriage should be your first degree. The pads you received today will ensure you attend lessons freely and with confidence.”

At Sharon Cohen Special Education School, headmaster Mr Mbara also conveyed appreciation, noting the importance of such support for children with special needs.

Imba Yamai Association, which focuses on skills training for teen mothers, also welcomed the intervention, describing it as a boost to the welfare and dignity of their beneficiaries.

Dungwiza and Tasimukira School also expressed their gratitude.
