Major clean-up to revamp city ahead of Sadc Summit

Local Government Minister Hon. Daniel Garwe says Chitungwiza has great potential to be a developmental hub, and Operation Chenesa Chitungwiza will transform the image of the town ahead of the Sadc Summit.
Operation Chenesa Chitungwiza was launched by Minister Garwe on July 6 at Chigovanyika Business Centre in St. Mary’s in an effort to sanitise this urban settlement ahead of the 44 SADC Summit to be hosted by Zimbabwe next month.
This follows the success of Operation Chenesa Harare Phase 1 launched in January this year.
“As the third largest city in Zimbabwe, Chitungwiza has great potential to be a developmental hub, providing opportunities for national economic growth through industrialisation and technological innovation,” said Minister Garwe.
“I have no doubt that Operation Chenesa Chitungwiza will transform the image of our city to international standards as we move towards an empowered upper middle-income society by 2030.”
He said Operation Chenesa Chitungwiza aligns with the implementation of the presidential declaration for establishing smart settlements through monthly clean-up campaigns and waste management programs.
“I am happy to inform you that the government is in the process of procuring 85 trucks, which comprise tipper trucks and refuse compactors, to capacitate local authorities in efficient solid waste management,”
“The beauty of our country should be showcased during the SADC Summit. Therefore, all efforts to sanitise our cities, especially Chitungwiza due to its proximity to the City of Harare, are of paramount importance.
“The existence of makeshift market stalls should stop forthwith. The existence of makeshift market stalls should stop forthwith. The local authority should condemn unauthorized food vending, which has become rampant, and enforce by-laws to ensure that all those who do not adhere face the full wrath of the law.”
Minister Garwe said that the private sector players, which have the capacity to establish landfills and facilities for recycling solid waste, can support this operation.
Her Worship, Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, expressed gratitude for continued support and recognition from the central government.
“Choosing Chitungwiza for this operation is proof of this. We are making every effort to collect refuse as efficiently as possible. We are only having challenges in inaccessible areas and when there are breakdowns,” she said
