Chitungwiza Municipality
Chitungwiza Municipality is a local authority tasked with providing services in the third-largest and fasted growing urban settlement in Zimbabwe named after the village where the legendary prophet Chaminuka lived in. The duty of the council which is 25km to the South East of the capital city, Harare is to provide portable water, housing, accommodation, refuse collection facilities and health services. It aspires to transform Chitungwiza into A Smart Heritage City by 2030 in line with government’s Vision 2030. We are open for investment.
History
The council was formed as a town council in 1978 in the colonial Rhodesia. It then gained the municipal status in 1981. The oldest location in Chitungwiza is St Mary’s followed by Zengeza.
Districts
Several suburbs in Chitungwiza are combined to make up four districts. St Mary's District is the first and oldest suburb and is divided into two areas, namely Manyame Park and St Mary's. Zengeza is another district and it is divided into Zengeza 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Zengeza 4 is the heart of Chitungwiza and, despite it being relatively the largest section, is home to a shopping mall (Chitungwiza Town Centre), located at the border with Seke Districts in Unit D. PaGomba is also another major Shopping Centre located in Zengeza 4. It is also home to Chitungwiza Central Hospital (CCH), one of the major referral Centres in Zimbabwe with a Renal Unit. Citimed is one of the largest private health institutions in Chitungwiza. Zengeza 4 also pays homage to the Global Institute of Business, publishers of the Nexus Book Series, as well as the Chitungwiza Arts Centre.
The other two districts in Chitungwiza were named after the Seke Communal area and these are Seke North and Seke South. Combined the two districts have the following residential areas that are Unit A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, O and Unit P. Popular Shopping Centers in Chitungwiza include Makoni, Pazvido, Chigovanyika, Huruyadzo, Unit J, and Zengeza 2, among other small Shopping Centres. In terms of people's markets, there is the popular Chikwanha market, followed by Jambanja.
Mayor
The current Mayor is Cllr Rosaria Mangoma of Ward 22 who succeeded Cllr Lovemore Maiko who saved as mayor for a few months before being recalled. Cllr Maiko, Cllr Kiven Mutimbanyoka and Cllr Gift Tsverere served between 2018 and 2023 with Cllr Maiko serving much of that term. In 2023 Cllr Maiko was re-elected Mayor before his recall.
CouncillorsChitungwiza has 33 councillors 25 of which were directly elected into council while the rest joined through proportional representation. The councillors serve a five-year term and those elected in 2023 will serve until 2028. The mayor is elected from the 33 councillors.
Town Clerk
The Chief Executive Officer (Town Clerk) is the one in charge of the management of the organization. The Acting Town Clerk for Chitungwiza is Mr Japson Nemuseso.
