In a touching tribute to motherhood, the Chitungwiza Gender Desk—made up of female councillors and council staff—donated groceries, blankets, and cash to four elderly women aged between 70 and 100 as part of a belated Mother’s Day celebration last Friday.
The beneficiaries, Gogo Nomia Nyamitambo (86), Gogo Zengeza (90), Gogo Esnat Makoni (72), and Gogo Emma Kaseke (100), were all smiles as they received the surprise gifts.
“We must take care of our elderly mothers—they are a blessing to us,” said Gender Desk coordinator, Councillor Betty Jasoni.
Gogo Kaseke, who recently turned 100, was overwhelmed with gratitude:
“I’m deeply thankful. This means so much to me.”
In a generous gesture, Councillor Chamunorwa Madya also pledged to pay school fees for three of Gogo Zengeza’s great-grandchildren for the next two terms.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Eddmore Muringa applauded the initiative, while Gender Desk focal person Ms Rudo Murungu and other councillors praised the unity and support shown by council staff.
The Chitungwiza Gender Desk has a history of giving, having previously donated sanitary pads to girls and essentials to expecting mothers.
