Health and Environmental Services

Director of Health and Environmental Services: Mr Herbert Chirowodza

It is headed by Mr Herbert Chirowodza and runs 4 polyclinics, which include maternity and family health care services. Clinics also provide dental, pharmaceutical services, voluntary testing for the Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) and counselling services. The family health services include immunization outreach services, nutrition education for mothers of under-five-year-olds and family planning education has got five divisions

The department renders quality, professional and affordable health care services, effects disease prevention and control, curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative measures, creates and increases awareness of health and environmental issues through information, education and communication that is responsive and peculiar to the health problems of our community.

Divisions

Health Education and Promotion Unit

-> Health promotion is the process of enabling people to take control over and improve their health.

-> The Health Promotion Unit works with a range of government departments, and non-government agencies to bring about changes that will lead to better health for all.

The Unit focuses on:

-> Implementation of health promotion strategies.

-> Identification of health promotion needs and priorities.

-> Coordination of health promotion activities.

-> Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health promotion activities.

Dental Services

The city offers expert dental services at affordable rates

Pharmacy Services

-> The department provides expert knowledge in managing medicines.

-> We are available to answer your questions and provide private counselling and education.

-> The pharmacy section provides the best total patient care.

Nursing services

-> The section maintains a comprehensive, coordinated and integrated health system.

-> The broad-based support for the health sector has been instrumental over the past decade in the decline of certain diseases such as polio and the success of certain programmers.

-> Health centers or local clinics are responsible for immunization of children, ante and post-natal care services, family planning consultations, voluntary medical male circumcision and basic curative services.

Environmental Health

The section is responsible for; premises inspections, food quality monitoring, water quality monitoring, water and sanitation promotion, disease surveillance, prevention and control, port health activities, public health legislation, health and hygiene education, air pollution control unit, hazardous substance and articles control unit and solid waste management.

Water and Sanitation

  • The city does not have a water works/water treatment plant of its own.
  • Water supply to the town is from city of Harare and the supply is inadequate.
  • The city with support of partners and Members of Parliament-Constituency Development Fund has sunk 65 boreholes mostly in the Seke North and South areas where the outbreak of cholera occurred in 2008-9 and July 2012 typhoid fever outbreak in Seke South.
  • Human waste is mostly disposed of through the sewer system which suffers recurrent blockages due to inadequate water to flush the system and failure to cope with the large volumes of effluent being generated in some areas of the town.
  • Domestic solid waste is collected by council in most areas at a frequency of 1/7 days on fixed days through the curb-side collection method for disposal at the dump site of council.
  • Non collection service areas exist in the town due to inaccessibility as there are no service roads and these account for 5% of the town.

Health Services

  • Public health services in the city are provided at the council’s four clinics, Chitungwiza Central Hospital, three (3) private hospitals and surgeries.
  • The city’s health centres are evenly distributed .i.e. one for each district (Seke North clinic, Seke South clinic, Zengeza clinic and St Mary’s clinic.
  • Each of the four clinics report epidemiological data to the city health department for consumption and forwarding to national level.
  • The proportion of the population served by the private sector is not known though these are mainly people on Medical Aid.
  • The private sector does not routinely report epidemiological information except epidemic related information, Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV and Vaccinations.
  • Laboratory services are provided at Chitungwiza Central Hospital and Municipal clinic whilst two private laboratories (CITIMed Infinite laboratory and CIMAS laboratory at Makoni Shopping Centre) compliment the services.
  • All the city clinics are linked directly to the city health directorate by personal mobile phones.
  • Land line network is in place but not functional.
  • However, the clinics are inter-linked by radios (walkie-talkies).

Health Services Management

  • The department, in conjunction with various non- governmental and private agencies, as well as donors, maintains a comprehensive, coordinated and integrated health system.
  • The technical aspects of health services cover research, disease control, environmental health and health education.
  • In the aggressive development of this sector, participatory planning ensures that health needs are met by implementing community based health interventions.
  • The department also trains community health workers from individual wards, thus extending health care throughout the whole service area.
