Masterplan gets full council’s thumps up

THE masterplan draft for Chitungwiza Municipality was adopted during a special council meeting on September 23 and it now awaits comments, corrections and additions from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
Chitungwiza Municipality engaged a research and consulting company, Development Governance Institute, to craft the masterplan that will guide the council, local and international partners for a period stretching from 2025 to 2045.
DGI expressed its commitment to come up with a master plan that will ensure efficient use of land in Chitungwiza during a Report of
Study and Written Statement Validation Workshop held on August 14 at the Aquatic Complex.
According to DGI the masterplan will ensure optimal, productive, and efficient use of land in the local authority’s planning area.
“We are contributing to the planning of an independent, sustainable, and resilient urban settlement competing with other urban centers in Zimbabwe and beyond for development opportunities,” said Lead Planner Kudzai Chatiza. “The council should have a clear urban core and satellite commercial zones so that we generate employment here.”
Another goal is to promote sustainable and resilient development and preserve Chitungwiza Municipality’s natural resource base and heritage.

Council team lead planner, Mr Whycliff Mutambanengwe, said the participation by stakeholders was very impressing.
“It’s important to note that the validation or feedback meeting went on very well. The participation by stakeholders was very encouraging. The stakeholders were in agreement that the Report of Study presented a true picture of Chitungwiza as it stands today in terms of opportunities, challenges, and the scope for transformation,” he said.
Then masterplan will go for an eight-week public exhibition after comments from the Department of Spatial Planning and Development.
