Chitungwiza Mayor, Her Worship Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, has officially launched the 2025 Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund, announcing that at least 500 less privileged individuals are expected to benefit from this year’s initiative.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Mayor Mangoma invited well-wishers from all sectors to contribute towards the noble cause, adding that the donation window remains open until 19 December, the date when the donated items will be distributed to beneficiaries.
The colourful event was graced by legislators, including the host, Zengeza West MP Hon Innocent Zvaipa, Hon Maxwell Mavhunga, Hon Goodrich Chimbaira, and Hon Brighton Mazhindu. The corporate world was also well represented, with participants from Nyaradzo Group, Harare Chamber of SMEs, Chitungwiza Business Community Trust, KC Funeral Services, and Eat n’ Lick, among others.
Nyaradzo Group pledged its full support towards the initiative, describing the Municipality as its number one client in Chitungwiza.
Adding a musical touch to the event, Ward 8 Councillor Johannes Mwandama showcased his talent by performing a rendition of the late national hero and music legend Dr Oliver Mtukudzi’s song, much to the delight of attendees.
In her remarks, Mayor Mangoma emphasized the importance of unity, compassion, and collective responsibility:
“This initiative extends beyond the walls of our Municipality. It is a collective call to action—to the corporate sector, local businesses, community leaders, and residents alike—to open our hearts and lend a helping hand to those less privileged among us. Together, we can ensure that everyone in Chitungwiza experiences the true spirit of Christmas: love, generosity, and hope.”
She further highlighted that this year’s target of 500 beneficiaries represents an increase from the 450 households supported in 2024, with the Council’s Social Welfare Office once again ensuring fair and transparent selection of recipients across Chitungwiza.
“Every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the potential to change a life. A simple donation or a shared message can make a meaningful impact, and our collective efforts will create lasting change,” she added.
Hon. Zvaipa commended the Mayor’s initiative, urging fellow leaders and residents to follow her example.
“As leaders, we should emulate the Mayor’s spirit of giving and continue to do more for our communities. The Cheer Fund reminds us that together, we can make a difference,” he said.
Adding a community voice, Madzibaba Tawanda, Johanne Masowe of Unit L praised the programme for addressing real challenges faced by struggling families.
“Many people in our communities have nothing to eat during Christmas. Such hardships even lead to domestic conflicts. This initiative is indeed a noble one,” he remarked.
