Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Charles Tawengwa, yesterday toured the Zengeza Outfall Sewer rehabilitation project which affirms shared commitment to addressing sewer challenges in Chitungwiza.
Chitungwiza Municipality is undertaking a two-phased sewer rehabilitation programme, which involves replacing old concrete pipes with 800mm glass-reinforced pipes (GRP) over a 5km stretch.
The project, split into the Zengeza Outfall (3.5 km) and Pagomba Outfall (1.5 km), is set to benefit approximately 23,000 households in Zengeza District when completed.
Funding for the project is being provided through devolution funds, while the African Development Bank, under the ZimFund project, donated the sewer pipes.
“When we requested the release of this money (devolution funds), we had to convince the government that it was a priority area. As government, we are here to back you,” said Minister Tawengwa during the tour.
Acting Director of Works, Engineer Talent Mashinga, noted that the rehabilitation would significantly improve service delivery for residents, particularly in areas that have long struggled with sewer blockages and overflows
