Eighty aspiring junior councillors attended a leadership training seminar organised by Chitungwiza Municipality last week, ahead of the final selection process and the subsequent inauguration of the 2025-2026 Junior Council.
The seminar aimed to equip participants with essential knowledge in leadership, child rights, gender responsiveness, and participatory governance. It was graced by Chitungwiza Mayor Councillor Rosaria Mangoma, Acting Town Clerk Mr Japson Nemuseso, and Acting Chamber Secretary Ms Memory Mpukuta.
Focal persons Mr Tafadzwa Kachiko and Ms Rudo Murungu also attended the seminar, along with Aldermen Tanaka Mundicha, Tokudzaishe Masaraure, Simbarashe Nyamazi, and Blessing Ncozana.
Mrs Manhivi, a representative from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Chitungwiza District), highlighted the importance of the Junior Council in championing child rights.
“Junior councillors advocate for children’s rights, including the right to participation, identity, and protection from abuse. They raise awareness on critical issues such as sexual reproductive health, child labour, and education, while working with local authorities to promote child-friendly governance,” she said.
ActionAid Zimbabwe representative Ms Anita Mutubuki emphasised the need for gender inclusivity in Junior Council initiatives.
“You should be able to identify how gender laws impact both boys and girls. Everything that we do should be inclusive and gender sensitive,” she urged.
Established in 1999, the Chitungwiza Junior Council was formed to address issues affecting youth in the town, including child abuse, sexually transmitted infections, and limited youth participation in local governance.
The council operates with a structured leadership system comprising a Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Town Clerk, and Chamber Secretary.
