The Municipality of Chitungwiza held a two-day workshop recently in partnership with the African Mayoral Leadership Initiative (AMALI) aimed at establishing a foundational data management system to address the town’s long-standing sewer infrastructure crisis.
The workshop, which took place on June 18 and 19 at the council’s head office, is part of the AMALI Data Programme under the broader AMALI City Leadership Programme.
It brings together Chitungwiza officials and two City Data Advisors from AMALI—Mr Zukisa Sogoni and Mr Chukwuma Okolie—to develop a data strategy that supports performance management in sewer rehabilitation projects.
Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma emphasised the urgency of resolving sewer-related challenges.
“My legacy goal under the AMALI Programme is to decisively address Chitungwiza’s perennial sewer problems within the next four years,” said Mayor Mangoma.
“This programme may not bring funding, but it empowers us to gather, use, and communicate data effectively to unlock resources and improve service delivery.”
The AMALI programme is expected to produce a refined sewer infrastructure strategy, including the development of a data inventory framework and a pilot for data collection and analysis.
Mayor Mangoma acknowledged progress on the ground, including new sewer pipe installations in St Mary’s and the ongoing rehabilitation of the Seke and Zengeza Outfall projects.
The AMALI team toured project sites in Chitungwiza on June 19. The initiative marks the first time Chitungwiza has formally embedded data systems into its infrastructure planning process.
“As we welcome the AMALI team to Chitungwiza, let this workshop be a turning point. May it spark a culture of smart data use that goes beyond sewer challenges to every facet of service delivery.”
