Chitungwiza donates sanitary ware to Sharon Cohen

Chitungwiza Mayor Cllr. Rosaria Mangoma, who was flanked by female councillors, has donated sanitary ware to ZimCare Trust’s Sharon Cohen Special School in Unit K.

The donation was followed by the planting of 31 trees by Chitungwiza staff, councillors, and Sharon Cohen staff at the school’s grounds, which was led by Mayor Mangoma.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Chitungwiza Gender Desk, led by Ms. Rudo Murungu and Councillor Betty Jasoni, in belated commemoration of the Menstrual Hygiene Day observed every May 28.

Sharon Cohen headmistress, Ms. Baleka Kunyeda, expressed gratitude to Chitungwiza Municipality for the donation.

The school, named after its patron, Victor Cohen’s daughter, Sharon, has appealed for continued support from well-wishers.

“We have heard your concerns, especially the issue of funding. We will try our level best and knock doors in search of support,” Cllr. Mangoma said.

“The council has joined this movement to complement the efforts to create a world where women and girls are no longer held back because they menstruate. This commemoration breaks the silence around menstruation and the stigma often associated with it,”

“Let’s empower the girl child. To give girls and women pads is to empower them.Let’s have love like this.

Cllr Betty Jasoni said: “The Bible says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. There is a unique call that we answer every month. I am very excited,”

“I would like to urge the business community to continue supporting young girls and women, especially when it comes to monthly periods. They need to celebrate their periods and be able to manage that time of the month with joy, respect, and dignity. Let’s continue working together for a better Chitungwiza.”

The councillor also thanked Mayor Mangoma, councillors, the Acting Town Clerk, and businesswoman Philo Grade for their support,” she said.

“When things that involve vulnerable children are not given the much-deserved attention, I become radical instantly. Sometimes I raise my voice not to shout but to be heard. I would send some messages to Ms. Murungu with a different tone. I just want to thank her for remaining calm.”

Mother Philo Grade also supported with sanitary ware for donation.

Other councillors who were present are Cllr Cynthia Pewula, Cllr Edith Mundiya, Cllr Tarisai Chikukwa, Cllr Sandra Mugunde, and Cllr Agatha Mujati.
